Francisco Altschul
August 10, 2023
Lifelong activist for social justice in El Salvador. Exiled, he represented the coalition fighting to replace El Salvador’s rightwing government. He found allies, made friends, worked across political lines in Washington. Later, he was twice the left-of-center government’s U.S. ambassador. Francisco had political commitment, great loyalty, and tremendous personal integrity.

My mother lived 98 full years, most in New York City. She outlived my father by 7 months, not to be parted for long. Born in Debrecen, Hungary, survived Auschwitz but lost her family, met my father and opened a dress store in NY. She loved art, cooking, and meeting new people. My friends were her friends and we were all so sad to see her go.

Heitzi Epstein
September 19, 2023
Our friend Heitzi never lost her passion for family, friendship and creativity during a life beset by illness. Trained as a lawyer, she eventually turned to art and teaching. Her rabbi eulogized, “When life handed her lemons, she made ceramics!” Heitzi was a true friend to all, and all – including her book group of 30+ years – miss her greatly.

Selma Harris Forstater
February 9, 2023
My mom, Selma Harris Forstater, was a proud life-long Philadelphian, a volunteer at the National Museum of Jewish History, a heartfelt Jew, and a lover of museums, music, Yiddishkeit, and family. She always enjoyed coming to the DMV for visits with her children and grandchildren who lived here.

Yoelith (Yola) Frank
November 21, 2022
Yoelith Frank was born 8-26-36 in Tel-Aviv, Israel. She was my beloved wife, companion, and partner for 61 years, and beloved mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She was talented in quilting, sewing and knitting. Yola is terribly missed by me and her family and friends. May her memory always be a blessing.
Jacob Frank
My mother passed away suddenly on November 21, 2022. She loved her family unconditionally and always enjoyed being with them, especially her grandchildren. She will be missed always. “‘How do you spell ‘love?’ – Piglet ‘You don’t spell it . . . you feel it.’ – Pooh” (A.A. Milne)

Goldie Garber
February 12, 2023
My aunt Goldie was born in 1937 Germany. She spent the war years in Belgium, raised by a Catholic family. Reunited with her parents, she emigrated to the US at age 12, married my uncle, raised two children, and was a beloved kindergarten principal and arts counselor at a sleepaway camp. At the time of death, she counted 24 great-grandchildren.

Sheira (Cheryl) Greenwald
before Passover, 2023
Sheira was a Fabrangen member during her college years. I knew her and her loving husband, Elihu Davison, from our early Weiss’ Farm and other havurah retreats era. Always a sweet nature and soft smile, Sheira managed to endure the long-term trials of M.S. with grace. Pneumonia took her and she was buried in Jerusalem.

Joyce Gurevich-Uvena
September 9 or 10, 2023
Joyce was a dear person and near-neighbor who readily befriended me a year ago, when I moved to Capitol Hill, her home for nearly 50 years. She radiated enthusiasm for life and optimism. These were sorely tested recently by health problems, painful losses and dilemmas, but she never lost hope. I miss her.

August 29, 2023
Our first first cousin. Suddenly. Distantly, in Michigan. But not alone and close in our hearts. As we read in the Haftarah on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, “Weeping they shall come; and with compassion I will guide them. I will bring them to streams of water, on a smooth path, where they shall not stumble.” May his memory be a blessing.

Dr. Joel J. Hertz
December 24, 2022
More brother than cousin, son than nephew, Joel saw the world in its richness and complexity, bringing his insights and kindness to the world, writ large and small – contributing to its betterment. May his memory truly be for a blessing.

Grace Horowitz
30 Kislev 5783
Former Fabrangener Grace Horowitz moved to a cooperative housing community in New York, but reached out to a few Fabrangeners when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Among her contributions to Fabrangen was devotedly coordinating and taking good care of Warren Glick when he died of cancer decades ago.
Bernardo Kalb
January 8, 2023
In loving memory of my centenarian father, Bernardo Kalb, Binyamin ben Bluma v’Dovid Melech, z”l. He loved the color orange. He was bursting with life. Creativity flowed through him, onto the page, into the spoken word. He loved us so much, and we loved him. All that he gave us so lovingly and freely, most importantly the love of life and family, lives deeply in our souls. We love you, Bernardo.

Bev LaRue
August 8, 2023
Bev was my first cousin. Born on September 8, 1947, she was the eldest of my father’s brother’s four children, and the link uniting the New Jersey LaRues (my roots) with the California LaRues. A teacher and tutor in greater San Diego, she became a seal/whale spotter and educator during summers in Oregon. Bev knew how to listen, share, and reach.

“Poet who plumbed the ordinary,” said the New York Times obituary. Only life, death, and beauty. Peter Vermes
September 2, 2023
My cousin Peter was the child of my father’s oldest sister, lost in the Shoah. Raised by grandparents, he lived in the same apartment in Budapest for most of 87 years, becoming an engineer developing printing technology. I loved his wry wit and sharp intellect. Visits to Hungary were marked by many espressos, which made for lively conversation!
